In this study, we measured the mercury concentration in 27 different fish species with high commercial value. Samples were taken from a region characterized by the diversity of aquatic environments. Mercury concentration in marine fish species varied from 30.4 to 216 ng g???1, while in estuarine species, it varied from 12.4 to 60.3 ng g???1. Compared to mercury concentration in marine species, none of the specimens from estuarine environment has reached a mercury concentration of 100 ng g???1. However, mercury concentrations in species from the freshwater Patos lagoon are remarkably higher (15.3 to 462 ng g???1) than those from the estuarine or marine region. Even though mercury concentrations in these fish species did not exceed the maximum level (500 ng g???1) allowed by WHO for human consumption, they represent the main food source for sea birds and mammals coming from South Pole during their migration period. 相似文献

The increasing levels of mercury (Hg) found in the atmosphere arising from anthropogenic sources, have been the object of great concern in the past two decades in industrialized countries. Brazil is the seventh country with the highest rate of mercury in the atmosphere. The major input of Hg to ecosystems is through atmospheric deposition (wet and dry), being transported in the atmosphere over large distances. The forest biomes are of strong importance in the atmosphere/soil cycling of elemental Hg through foliar uptake and subsequent transference to the soil through litter, playing an important role as sink of this element. Soil microarthropods are keys to understanding the soil ecosystem, and for such purpose were characterized by the soil fauna of two Units of Forest Conservation of the state of the Rio de Janeiro, inwhich one of the areas suffer quite interference from petrochemicals and industrial anthropogenic activities and other area almost exempts of these perturbations. The results showed that soil and litter of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil tend to stock high mercury concentrations, which could affect the abundance and richness of soil fauna, endangering its biodiversity and thereby the functioning of ecosystems. 相似文献

Fractionation of rare earth elements (REE) and other trace metal concentrations (Th, U, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) between mangrove sediments and claw muscles and shells of male crabs (Ucides cordatus) from a subtropical estuary highly impacted by fertilizer industry activities was investigated. This is the first record of REE distribution in these organisms, and the results showed higher accumulations of these metals, U and Th in shells, probably related to the replacement of Ca during molting. Contents of Cd, Cr and Ni were similar in both tissues, but Cu, Zn and Pb were mostly accumulated in the claw muscle with concentrations above those considered safe for human consumption according to the Brazilian legislation. REE fractionation was different in the analyzed tissues being softer in the shells. The results provided evidences that the water absorbed during molting controls the chemistry of REE in shells. In contrast, the chemistry of REE in the claw muscle, in which was observed preferential absorption of light REE, is controlled by diet. REE fractionation obtained for the claw muscles was closely correlated to the observed in the contaminated substrate and in materials related to the production of phosphate fertilizers (contamination source), which supports their transference to this Ucides cordatus tissue without fractionation by the ingestion of sediments. Our results showed the potential use of crab tissues for monitoring REE and trace element sources in mangrove areas, with claw muscle exhibiting the contaminant source fingerprint. 相似文献

During the Amazonian flood season in 2012, the Negro River reached its highest level in 110 years, submerging residential and commercial areas which appeared associated with an elevation in the observed gastroenteritis cases in the city of Manaus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological water quality of the Negro River basin during this extreme flood to investigate this apparent association between the illness cases and the population exposed to the contaminated waters. Forty water samples were collected and analysed for classic and emerging enteric viruses. Human adenoviruses, group A rotaviruses and genogroup II noroviruses were detected in 100, 77.5 and 27.5% of the samples, respectively, in concentrations of 103–106 GC/L. All samples were compliant with local bacteriological standards. HAdV2 and 41 and RVA G2, P[6], and P[8] were characterised. Astroviruses, sapoviruses, genogroup IV noroviruses, klasseviruses, bocaviruses and aichiviruses were not detected. Statistical analyses showed correlations between river stage level and reported gastroenteritis cases and, also, significant differences between virus concentrations during this extreme event when compared with normal dry seasons and previous flood seasons of the Negro River. These findings suggest an association between the extreme flood experienced and gastrointestinal cases in the affected areas providing circumstantial evidence of causality between the elevations in enteric viruses in surface waters and reported illness. 相似文献

The development of swimming (myotomal) muscles was studied in herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) caught in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, in spring 1990 and reared at either 5, 10 or 15°C. Two muscle-fibre types can be distinguished in the myotomes of herring larvae using ultrastructural criteria. A single layer of small-diameter muscle fibres, packed with mitochondria, is present beneath the entire surface of the skin (superficial muscle fibres). The remaining bulk of the muscle is composed of larger diameter fibres (inner muscle fibres) containing significantly more myofibrils than the superficial fibres. In 1 d-old larvae, the number of inner muscle fibres in myotomes immediately posterior to the yolk-sac was 311±41 at 15°C, 257±22 at 10°C and 187±22 at 5°C (mean±SD,n=6). The average diameter of inner muscle fibres increased with decreasing temperature, so that the total cross-sectional area of muscle was similar at each temperature. After 6 to 7 d, the number of muscle fibres had significantly increased at 15°C (383±25), but not at 10°C (281±32) or 5°C (192±17). In contrast, the average cross-sectional area of inner muscle fibres had increased by 19% at 15°C, 34% at 10°C, and 26% at 5°C. Temperature also influenced the relative proportions and spatial distributions of muscle-fibre organelles. For example, in 1 d-old larvae, the fraction of muscle-fibre volume (volume density) occupied by mitochondria in the superficial fibres was significantly higher at 15°C (46.0%) than at either 5°C (37.6%) or 10°C (38.8%). In the inner muscle fibres, the volume density of mitochondria was 26.1% at 15°C, 20.5% at 10°C and 15.9% at 5°C, whereas the volume density of myofibrils was similar at the three temperatures (33 to 38%). Endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) effects during early life have the potential to modulate population structure, either directly through increased mortality or by causing inappropriate aggregation events, thus affecting the number of young that will reach adulthood. An alteration in the dispersal and recruitment patterns can also impair the connectivity among geographically distant populations. However, the detection of EDC-induced effects occurring after egg hatch, when newborns increase their chances of contacting with environmentally dispersed contaminants, is not a simple process as effects might be masked by the large natural mortality rates that usually occur during fish early life.Since there is a lack of information regarding the impact of EDCs on fish early life dispersal patterns, particularly on vertical migrations patterns, the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of EE2 on the vertical distribution of newborn fish was assessed through an ex situ exposure experiment. Syngnathus abaster newborns were exposed to EE2 (nominal concentrations of 8, 12 and 36 ng L−1) and the dynamics of their vertical distribution was monitored for up to 40 d. No significant differences in overall mortality were observed between treatments or in the dynamics of the registered death curves. Nevertheless, an alteration in the distribution patterns was observed. The commonly benthic newborn tended to shift their vertical distribution towards the surface, in a dose-dependent manner. Curiously, a follow up of the exposed pipefish confirmed that EE2 effects were also noticeable upon sexual maturity, namely by the alteration of several primary and secondary sexual characters. The observation that vertical distributional patterns, at least in pipefish, are clearly altered at environmentally relevant EE2 concentrations indicates that EDC’s impact in fish larvae behaviour should be considered when addressing the effects of contaminants, given the obvious implications on population connectivity, stability and persistence. 相似文献

In Brazil, few studies on microbial content of dental solid waste and its antibiotic susceptibility are available. An effort has been made through this study to evaluate the hazardous status of dental solid waste, keeping in mind its possible role in cross-infection chain. Six samples of solid waste were collected at different times and seasons from three dental health services. The microbial content was evaluated in different culture media and atmospheric conditions, and the isolates were submitted to antibiotic susceptibility testing. A total of 766 bacterial strains were isolated and identified during the study period. Gram-positive cocci were the most frequent morphotype isolated (48.0%), followed by Gram-negative rods (46.2%), Gram-positive rods (5.0%), Gram-negative-cocci (0.4%), and Gram-positive coccobacillus (0.1%). Only two anaerobic bacteria were isolated (0.3%). The most frequently isolated species was Staphylococcus epidermidis (29.9%), followed by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (8.2%), and Enterococcus faecalis (6.7%). High resistance rate to ampicillin was observed among Gram-negative rods (59.4%) and Gram-positive cocci (44.4%). For Gram-negative rods, high resistance was also noted to aztreonam (47.7%), cefotaxime (47.4%), ceftriaxone and cefazolin (43.7%), and ticarcillin-clavulanic acid (38.2%). Against Gram-positive cocci penicillin exhibit a higher resistance rate (45.0%), followed by ampicillin, erythromycin (27.2%), and tetracycline (22.0%). The present study demonstrated that several pathogenic bacteria are present in dental solid waste and can survive after 48 h from the waste generation time and harbor resistance profiles against several clinical recommended antibiotics. 相似文献

Estuarine shallow areas and coastal lagoons are known to receive and concentrate multiple inputs, either from land, rivers or coastal areas, being intensively impacted by chemical contamination, namely endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Despite the ubiquitous coexistence of several classes of EDCs in most of these aquatic ecosystems, there is still limited information regarding their combined effects. Furthermore, given the immediate implications for population dynamics, the available laboratory studies almost invariably focus on very specific life history stages, such as embryonic development or reproduction, thus creating a gap on our knowledge of what happens in between. During this 'intermediate phase', the newborn larvae and juveniles face numerous challenges whose outcome may impair reproduction or even survival. The black-striped pipefish, Syngnathus abaster, member of the Syngnathidae family (comprising pipefish, seahorses and seadragons), usually breeds in coastal areas such as estuaries, where its newborns are immediately exposed to EDCs. Given the ongoing decline of pipefish populations, together with the observed shrinkage and fragmentation of seagrass meadows, known to be impacted by EDCs, a first reasonable question to address is if pipefish newborns respond to environmentally relevant concentrations of ubiquitous EDCs, either single or in combination. Hence, a seven days exposure experiment to the estrogenic chemical ethinylestradiol (EE(2)) and the androgenic chemical tributyltin (TBT), single and in binary mixtures, was conducted. Selected behavioural (e.g. predator avoidance) and developmental variables (e.g. growth) were monitored in pipefish juveniles after EDCs insult. The obtained results indicate that EE(2), TBT, or their combined exposure, do impact pipefish early life. However, the pattern of results emerging from the measured variables clearly indicates that mixtures significantly modulate newborn responses in distinct ways when compared to individual chemical's exposure. These findings further demonstrate the importance of addressing the issue of chemical mixtures of pollutants acting through dissimilar mode of action. Independently of all the observed response variations, an ultimate conclusion seems certain: EE(2) and TBT, single or in combination, induce disruption patterns able to imbalance pipefish survival. Since these (as well as other) contaminants are present in estuarine areas, profound implications in population structure could be expected, ranging from a decrease in recruitment to a disruption of sexual selection.
